The questions I hear most.
Short answers to what students and families ask about CollegeUncovered, the NESCAC, Little Ivies, and finding the right liberal arts college.
Who is CollegeUncovered for?+
High-achieving high school students — and their families — who want to look beyond the usual Big Ten and brand-name universities and seriously consider elite liberal arts colleges, the NESCAC, and the Little Ivies.
What is the NESCAC?+
The New England Small College Athletic Conference: 11 small, highly selective liberal arts schools (Amherst, Bates, Bowdoin, Colby, Connecticut College, Hamilton, Middlebury, Trinity, Tufts, Wesleyan, and Williams) known for tiny classes, strong academics, and elite NCAA Division III athletics.
What is a 'Little Ivy'?+
An informal label for a group of small, historically prestigious Northeastern liberal arts colleges. It includes the NESCAC schools plus others most commonly grouped alongside them — like Swarthmore, Colgate, Bucknell, Haverford, Vassar, Lafayette, and Union.
Are liberal arts colleges actually as strong as bigger-name universities?+
For undergraduate education, often stronger. Small classes are taught by professors (not TAs), thesis-level research happens early, and top liberal arts colleges regularly place graduates into top law schools, med schools, MBA programs, consulting firms, and investment banks at rates comparable to — and sometimes above — Ivy League universities.
Do I have to be an athlete to consider a NESCAC school?+
Not at all. NESCAC schools recruit talented athletes for Division III programs, but the majority of students on these campuses are not varsity athletes. They're chosen for academics first.
How expensive are these colleges — really?+
Sticker prices at top liberal arts colleges are high, but most meet 100% of demonstrated financial need, and several are entirely no-loan. Many middle- and upper-middle-income families end up paying less than at a flagship state university.
How far from the Midwest are these schools?+
Most NESCAC and Little Ivy schools are a direct flight — usually 2 to 3 hours — from Chicago, Minneapolis, or Detroit. Distance is filterable inside the colleges database so you can see exactly what's realistic.
How do I actually work with you?+
Reach out at collegeuncovered.pathways@gmail.com. I offer College List Review, Application Planning, and Information Sessions — full details are on the Services page.
Are the college statistics on this site official?+
The database is a curated overview meant to help you compare schools quickly. Statistics are directional and drawn from publicly available information. Always confirm the latest numbers directly on each college's admissions or career-services page.
